This is necessary to fill the shortage of skilled workers in the hotel industry. “Young people don’t want to work five days a week anymore,” Rochat said in an interview with “SonntagsZeitung”. “If we want the younger generation to be interested in the hospitality industry, we have to get out of our comfort zone.”
He acknowledged that not a single small hotel could handle such a working concept. “But if three or four hotels come together in the same place and create a pool of collaborators, it can work.”
According to Rochat, education should be more geared towards the needs of the market. “I have a modular system in mind, like today, where you get a bachelor’s degree but follow an internship period with a semester of study at the university.”
To prepare for the future, the industry also needs to encourage human interaction with guests. «Anything that does not require human interaction must be automated. Because hotel employees need to be in direct contact with guests as much as possible.” “Why shouldn’t a cook’s apprentice come to the table and talk to the guests? We have to be more flexible, especially in the restaurant industry.”
