It’s big business in the food industry: artificial sweeteners that are supposed to help you lose weight and get a better figure. In yoghurts, beverages, coffee and even confectionery: Sugar substitutes suggest a healthier life. Wrong, now warns the World Health Organization (WHO). There is no advantage in weight control, but there are “possible undesirable effects with long-term use”.
Specifically, WHO warns of an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and even death. “People need to consider other ways to reduce their free sugar intake, such as by eating foods that contain naturally occurring sugar, such as fruit or sugar-free foods and beverages,” said Francesco Branca, WHO director of nutrition and nutrition food safety.
Branca explains that artificial sweeteners “have no nutritional value.” “To improve health, people should reduce sweets in their diets from an early age.” Not using sugar substitutes reduces the risk of NCDs. The WHO recommendation, released on Monday, does not apply to personal care and hygiene products that contain artificial sweeteners, such as toothpaste, skin creams and medicines. (cut)
