Iseltwald takes additional measures against tourist flows

The pier at Iseltwald BE would have been pretty inconspicuous – if there hadn’t been a turnstile there for about three weeks. The municipality set it up so that visitors would have to pay to take pictures at the pier.

Pier caused a stir because of a scene in the Korean Netflix drama “Crash Landing on You.” The turnstile alone cannot tame the tourist crowd. As the municipality wrote in a statement, it has now taken more precautions.

Buses are now met by a security service as soon as they leave the highway. “Only pre-booked and paying buses are allowed to leave the village square,” Mayor Peter Rubi said in a statement.

The municipality writes that the measures were taken so that “all guests can enjoy Iseltwald and the villagers feel comfortable”. Chaotic scenes like last summer should be avoided. At that time, according to the municipality, sometimes there were more than six cars in the small village square, blocking both each other and the access road.

Exception for overnight guests and boat owners

There is an exception to bus fares: groups that come to the village not only for a short photo stop, but also to spend the night there or visit a restaurant can pass for free.

A problem for extravagant places like Iseltwald is tourists who come in masses but do not contribute to the local economy. Turnstiles and fares for buses now allow even naive photo tourists to pay for their visit.

Individual travelers are advised to travel by public transport. BLS Schifffahrt will expand its services to Iseltwald in the summer.

There is also an exception for boat owners: They can dock at the pier as usual and return to their boats free of charge by buying a token for turnstiles at restaurants or at the shop in the village.
