Zurich residents block expansion of nursing school

Careum is one of the largest nursing schools in Switzerland.

It’s a classic: Residents complain about the expansion of a neighboring building. Knowing that they could delay the construction project for years. Walk to federal court. However, the latest situation is surprising. Because it’s about the Careum nursing school in Zurich. In times of shortages of skilled workers in the health sector, who might be in the interest of preventing the expansion of a training center?

In the upscale university district in Zurichberg, residents oppose the Zukunft Hochschulgebiet Zürich association. This is reported by “NZZ”. Objectors, who have already succeeded in protesting that the university hospital’s new building may have fewer floors than originally planned, want to block the expansion of the Careum nursing school. And because of 60 centimeters!

outlook is at risk

Background: Just a few hundred meters behind the Careum, the Great Fluntern Church’s observation deck is 500 meters above sea level. For example, no building should be higher so as not to block the view of Uetliberg. So there is a compromise: a maximum of 486 meters for buildings in front of the church.

Just stupid: The extension of the nursing school should come to 486 meters 60 centimeters. So 60 centimeters is too high. “This 60 centimeters would cost us a whole floor. This would correspond to an area of 1000 square meters. Under these conditions, the construction project could no longer pay off,” the CEO of Careum tells «NZZ». Because the building will be increased from four to eight floors to 32 meters.

Why not voluntarily plan deeper?

Opponents see it differently. “We don’t understand why Careum didn’t voluntarily do a little deeper planning,” says one of the applicants. Surely there would be alternatives. For example, a variant where the increase will spread to two or four existing buildings instead of just one.

The Building Appeals Commission initially dismissed the appeal. It is not yet clear whether the case will be taken to the administrative court. But if you make a fuss of about 60 centimeters, it’s not surprising. (be)
