Criminals stole data from Bernina

The malware attack took place on the Wednesday morning before Easter three weeks ago. The company was then temporarily restricted in operation. With a few exceptions, Bernina International announced on Wednesday that operational capability has returned to its pre-attack level.

As stated in the statement, the hackers had released sensitive data from Bernina on Wednesday night. According to industry magazine Inside-it.ch, a group called Alphv, formerly known as Black Cat, claimed responsibility for the attack. The stolen data included business documents, copies of employee ID cards, passwords, confidentiality agreements and job offers.

A total of 200 gigabytes of documents, or about 415,000 files, were seized, according to an online confession letter. The company explained that according to previous information, the volume of data stolen was much lower than the hackers had claimed.

Criminals used so-called ransomware in their cyberattacks. Hackers can use it to infiltrate a victim’s computer system and access or intercept IT systems or data. They can also lock their victims with encryption technology and demand a ransom.

Founded in 1893, the Bernina sewing machine manufacturer has its headquarters in Steckborn TG. The company employs approximately 1,200 people worldwide. Alphv claims to collect data primarily from Switzerland and its second manufacturing facility in Thailand. Alphv is behind the cyberattacks against Zurich financial services provider Finaport in February and ground service Swissport last year, according to its own statements. (SDA)
