Car prices continued to rise at the beginning of the year. In the first quarter of 2023, a new car was on average 1.5 percent more expensive than a year ago. (archive image)

The statement noted that new cars often become a bit more expensive. Advertisers charged an average of 59,500 francs for a new vehicle. Finally, the expensive SUVs, many of which are offered on the platform, are responsible for this high average price, as a spokesperson on demand explained. However, the proportion of light and plug-in hybrids, which are quite expensive, has also increased significantly.

Meanwhile, used car prices fell 0.6 percent on average to CHF 32,500. In this category, too, SUVs are important because of their large number. The spokesperson said that most of those who used to drive a station wagon are now switching to an SUV.

By vehicle category, car dealers on the platform have charged higher prices, especially for minivans. On average, the price of new and used cars rose 3.1 percent to just under CHF 21,000, followed by sedans up 2.3 percent (CHF 32,800). Small car prices rose 1.7 percent (CHF 15,100). SUVs were sold on average 1.1 percent more expensive (44,600).

According to the survey, only station wagons became cheaper. Prices for this car category in the January-March period were on average 2.6 percent lower than in the same quarter of the previous year, just under CHF 15,100.

But only the announced prices were collected for the survey, according to the spokesperson. If buyers were still able to negotiate discounts during the actual transaction, they would not be included in this survey.

Also, more cars have been advertised on the platform since last summer. According to the announcement, this indicates that the delivery situation in the auto market continues to loosen. “The delivery situation is steadily stabilizing and waiting times for orders are getting shorter again,” the communiqué says. From January to March 2023, around 49,000 new cars were advertised on Autoscout24. That’s about 6,000 more than the previous year.

But not only is the new car market recovering, the used market is also benefiting from the recovery in supply chains. “Many private individuals and companies that have ordered a new car are finally able to accept it, meaning that the previous vehicle has ended in the used car market,” says Maurice Acker, Head of Commercial Customers at Autoscout24.

Used vehicle supply increased by approximately 19,300 vehicles in the first quarter to approximately 274,000 used vehicles advertised.
