He shared the video on Tiktok just before going to bed. The next morning, 45,000 people saw the mango and mozzarella salad. Two days later, the video had more than 600,000 views. It’s now over 1.5 million. “I couldn’t explain it,” Jey Cisullo (33) tells Blick at his home in Zurich-Altstetten.
Many Tiktok stars in the country know the story of the Swiss woman. overnight breakthrough Suddenly famous. But why? And how is it actually?
“The video gave me no peace,” says Cisullo. “Why did the mango-mozzarella salad get attention but not my fancy dragon egg?”
Looking at Tiktok statistics also does not give a clear answer. After all, the numbers show that the video went viral, especially in Germany. Are our neighbors fond of mango and mozzarella salad? Not likely. “Something must have triggered the Tiktok algorithm,” says Cisullo.
He still hasn’t solved the mystery, but he has a guess. “A certain Nina Chuba was repeatedly mentioned in the comments. I didn’t know him.”
Chuba (24) is a German rapper. He released the single “Mangos mit Chili” in February – two days before Jey Cisullo released his own version of mango and mozzarella salad on Tiktok. Nina Chuba’s fans came across Cisullo’s profile. The algorithm noticed the sudden interest from Germany and showed the video to more and more people. An accident. Typical Tiktok.
“Of course I’m pleased with the huge interest in the mango and mozzarella salad,” says Cisullo. But I know it will be difficult to repeat this success,” he said.
Cisullo has been active on Tiktok since 2021. At that time, she also made her first cooking videos for YouTube. But the Zurich native quickly realizes: “Tiktok is more fun, better, simpler. Making videos for YouTube was time consuming. The view count was also low.”
At the time, Cisullo was head of planning for ZSC’s new Swiss Life Arena. It’s a stressful job. “It was very exciting but not my passion,” she says today. In the summer of last year, the amateur cook put everything on one card, quit his job and made a video for Tiktok every day from Monday to Friday.
“Morning shopping, lunch cooking and afternoon video shooting. It was my daily routine – I love it,” says the influencer, who prefers to call himself a “content creator.” “I focus on food, not myself.”
TRUE. Jey Cisullo’s 25,000+ followers have never seen him on Tiktok. “I’m not shy,” she says. “But it should be about the content, not about me.”
Cisullo is now 60 percent working again. He has two days and a weekend to shoot food videos. Was he making too little money? “I asked a lot of questions and still get them, but I still wanted a secure income,” says Cisullo. He demonstrates the content planning he manages with an Excel spreadsheet.
Cisullo has partnerships with Migros, Betty Bossi and the Sky Show streaming platform. He currently charges 750 to 1,500 francs for a video. “I also have to turn down requests so I can implement my own ideas.” Because Cisullo wants to continue to grow with some of his own designed recipes. To live on Tiktok one day.
