Easter attracts twice as many people to the slopes than last year

Engelberg OW drew visitors into the mountains with a waterslide competition over the Easter weekend.

The end of the season is just as it should be: Easter brings snow to the Swiss ski regions first, followed by days of bright sun. “We had a fresh winter wonderland covered in snow in exceptional weather,” says Urs Egli (46) of the Titlis mountain railway in Engelberg OW. Other ski areas claimed by Blick are also praised.

The Aletsch Arena, which includes the Valais ski areas of Riederalp, Bettmeralp and Fiescheralp, hosted twice as many winter sports enthusiasts at Easter this year than last year. This also has to do with timing: Easter last year wasn’t until mid-April – the earlier the holidays, the better for ski areas.

“Behavior Satisfied”

Weather and snow conditions are even more important. And this year everything was fine. “At higher altitudes, there is more snow than usual all winter. “Guests are currently enjoying the best natural snow slopes,” said Berno Stoffel, 52, Manager of Seilbahnen Schweiz, assessing this weekend.

Easter is the last busy weekend for most ski areas. That’s why it’s important to build strong sales again. Especially this winter after the tough season.

Looking at the season as a whole, Titlis Bergbahnen’s Urs Egli is only “moderately satisfied”. Season ticket sales were very good, but day tickets were less impressive.

Halligalli on the mountain

The people in charge of Crans-Montana VS were able to extend the ski season by a month thanks to the recent snowfall. “Easter was great, but it didn’t save the whole season,” says CEO Bertrand Csignol. Visitor numbers are currently down 8 percent compared to the previous year. Even minus 15 percent in terms of sales.

Many ski areas rely on Halligalli at Easter to attract as many visitors as possible at the end of the season: music festivals and outdoor concerts are held in many places. Andermatt UR and Engelberg OW were even more creative: “Water Slides” competitions were held there, where winter sports enthusiasts dared to ski and snowboard and go on the water instead of the snow.
