Will robots one day replace my job? This decades-old fear has already become a reality in some cases, for example in industry. But now it really starts. But it is no longer mechanical robots that we should fear, but algorithms and artificial intelligence (AI) based on them.
The new fears are rooted in the text bot ChatGPT. It fascinates with its sophisticated answers to everyday questions. So much so that, for example, the use of ChatGPT in schools is already prohibited. This leads to downside questions: What will artificial intelligence soon be able to do better than humans? How will this change your daily work life? What jobs can employers increasingly rely on AI for in the future?
Two studies have addressed these questions. The first study comes from the creators of ChatGPT: Researchers from the startup OpenAI teamed up with scientists from the University of Pennsylvania to find out which jobs are most affected by ChatGPT. The following occupational groups are mentioned:
AI can take over at least some of its previous missions. Although AI systems currently often provide false facts in their responses, they are already producing remarkable results in tasks such as translation, classification, creative writing, and computer code generation.
Researchers from OpenAI and the University of Pennsylvania hypothesize that most workplaces will be modified in some way by AI language models. About 80 percent of employees (in the US) work in jobs where at least one task can be completed faster by productive AI. “Generative AI” refers to computer programs that can generate new ideas, content, or solutions instead of just working with predefined rules or instructions.
In another study, the Goldman Sachs bank calculated that about two-thirds of existing jobs are exposed to some degree of AI automation. Generative AI can thus replace up to a quarter of existing work. When predicted worldwide, productive AI could automate something equivalent to 300 million full-time jobs.
But experts also see jobs and occupations where AI will play only a minor role. These primarily include manual trades, but also include other professional groups such as:
Artificial intelligence makes many explanations with great persuasive power, even though the facts are often wrong. This problem is far from being solved.
In addition, there are systemic limitations. AI requires enormous computing capacities and therefore enormous amounts of energy. This has many disadvantages, both financially and climatically.
As a general rule, the more repetitive a job is and the less necessary purely human factors such as empathy, the higher the chance that AI will soon take over. Even if jobs are not completely eliminated, various activities will at least additionally be taken over by artificial intelligence.
It is also clear that large-scale use of artificial intelligence will lead to profound changes in daily life. Changes where there are still few regulatory guidelines. This led to a large number of entrepreneurs, some of whom are well known, such as Elon Musk (51) or Steve Wozniak (72), signing an open letter from the Institute of Life demanding the suspension of AI development. Swiss politicians also signed it. AI change is just getting started.
