Organic egg production and consumption reach record levels

Thus, the trend towards more organic and floating eggs in production and consumption continued in 2022. As FOAG wrote, organic and free-range consumer eggs accounted for about half of retail sales.

Overall, Swiss egg producers brought 1.1 billion eggs to the local market last year. 69 percent of the eggs consumed or processed in Switzerland were also produced here. For comparison: Ten years ago the domestic market share was still 55 percent.

As FOAG also explains, the end of the corona pandemic has negatively impacted egg consumption in Switzerland. Total egg demand in Switzerland decreased by approximately 63 million to 1.654 billion in 2022 compared to the previous year.

Retailers also sold fewer eggs overall compared to the 2020 and 2021 pandemic years. Last year, 186 eggs were consumed per person.

As FOAG writes, declining demand in the retail trade and continued high domestic egg production led to a record 162 million processed eggs being produced in Switzerland in 2022. With 94 million eggs, significantly fewer eggs were imported for processing than in 2021.
