More passengers at Zurich Airport

As the company announced Monday evening, 1.73 million people traveled from Zurich Airport in February. This is an increase of 76.6 percent compared to the same period last year.

However, there is still a long way to go before the 2019 level, that is, before the corona pandemic. As the announcement further reveals, passenger numbers were only 85.2 percent of the February 2019 value.

In 15,810 take-offs or landings, the number of flights increased by 36.7 percent compared to the same month of the previous year. Therefore, the increase in flights is less pronounced than the number of passengers.

Accordingly, the occupancy rate of the plane has increased significantly compared to a year ago: 78 of the 100 seats on the plane are now occupied again. That’s 11 more seats than in the same month last year. An average of 129 passengers were seated on each inbound and outbound plane.

The increasing number of passengers also increased the sales at the airport stores. Commercial sales increased by almost half to CHF 38.4 million in February. This has practically reached the 2019 level.

Airside shops, that is, shops that passed security checks, increased their sales by two-thirds, while shops in the airport’s public area increased their sales by about a third. Meanwhile, the shops after the security check sell more than the generally accessible shops before the security check.

In contrast, freight dropped after the outbreak during the pandemic: a total of 31,737 tons were handled at the airport in February. This is 10 percent less than the previous year and even 13 percent less than in 2019 before Corona.
