UBS has to change thousands of asset statements after failure

class=”sc-97fd9fa8-0 jNFKxv”>

The UBS customer is happy to file his tax return in the canton of Zurich. Because the procedure has become so easy. He fills everything online, uploads paperless documents to the system, and finally the canton’s software processes them perfectly. This is how digitization works – he thought.

Until he sat down at his computer last weekend, he first loaded the wage statement into the cantonal software, then calculated the rent deposit. So far, so good. But then the system crashed. It rejected UBS’s eTax Statement, the digital document that must use barcodes to automatically assign all assets to the correct positions. Instead of immediately seeing how much tax owed, he received an error message: “It was not possible to import the eTax ID. The PDF file is not in the expected format for the electronic tax return or the electronic tax return for the previous year.»

Tax office confirmed the issues

This is not a separate case. UBS has sent thousands of customers false digital tax returns that are not compatible with the Canton of Zurich’s software. “We confirm that the UBS receipts are currently unreadable,” said Reto Flury, spokesperson for the Canton of Zurich finance department. “But it’s not because of the cantonal system. Other banks’ e-tax returns are okay across the country.»

UBS confirms the problem. However, only a small percentage of Swiss customers were affected.

Fault? detail.

Only Zurich residents affected

The software was unable to provide the digital tax IDs with the required IBAN numbers. Probably due to a system change in UBS. The bank worked with the Swiss Tax Conference. But he had the new e-tax return developed by “a renowned Swiss-based tax and advisory service provider,” according to a letter he wrote to the client. However, the canton of Zurich relies solely on the “standardized technology of the Swiss Tax Conference”.

According to a bank spokesperson, the IT professionals at UBS were able to fix the issue in the past few days. New e-tax returns were issued and sent to those affected. Therefore, UBS customers should be able to file their tax returns by the end of March.

UBS cannot explain why those affected are mainly people living in Zurich. No known error messages from other cantons.
