Meng Wanzhou was placed under house arrest in Vancouver for three years and fought a legal battle against extradition to the United States.

China has increased the pressure on Canada by arresting two Canadians suspected of spying in China. Diplomats spoke of “hostage politics”. Meng Wanzhou was able to return to her homeland, where she was hailed as a hero, after a September 2021 settlement with US prosecutors in exchange for the release of the two Canadians. The department was only shut down last December when US prosecutors asked the New York court to close the case.
