Wine from 2022 will be extraordinary

Weather has put the sugar content in grapes above average, as the Federal Department of Agriculture (FOAG) announced on Thursday. Bağcılar produced 33 million liters more wine than the previous year.

However, the 2021 grape harvest was at its lowest since 1957 – freezing to death in spring frosts, washed away by rain, devastated by hail and mold. The recovery in 2022 differed regionally.

The vineyards of German-speaking Switzerland produced 16 million liters of wine, 94 percent more than in 2021. In western Switzerland, the harvest was 78 million litres, up 63 percent. In Italian-speaking Switzerland, the increase was less, with 8 percent to 5 million liters. On a ten-year average, the 2022 grape harvest increased by 10 percent, or 9 million liters.

Viticulture benefited from the heat and drought in 2022, as FOAG explains the growth. Such weather conditions are favorable both for the maturation of vineyards and against diseases. At the end of June, the first signs of the disease were seen, but they could be brought under control. As a result, less pesticides were needed.

In terms of weather, there were hardly any spring frosts and hail in 2022. This promoted the flowering and optimal development of the vines. Even as drought strained the vines, irrigation kept losses within limits. August’s rainfall made the grapes grow in volume, which not only increased the quality but also the quantity, according to FOAG.

In 2022, the area under grape cultivation decreased by 20 percent to 14,609 hectares nationwide. That’s a 0.1 percent drop.
