Planes can take off again in the USA

There was a total collapse in aviation in the United States Wednesday morning. Thousands of planes remained on the ground and were not allowed to take off. Reason: A computer issue at the national aviation authority FAA.

Airplanes already in the air can continue to fly. This is indicated by the “Flightradar24” page. Landings were also possible without any problems.

The FAA told NBC News shortly after the incident: “The FAA is working to restore its systems. Operations within the national airspace system are affected.”

Flight operations are slowly restarting

According to the website Flightaware.com, more than 750 flights within the United States, to or from the United States, were delayed and nearly 100 flights were canceled as of Wednesday morning (local time). It is not clear whether the outage was caused by a computer malfunction.

Shortly before 9 a.m. local time (3:00 p.m. Swiss time), the FAA reported that everything was clean. The first planes were able to take off again in the afternoon, Swiss time, after the flight authority had initially ordered all domestic flights to remain on the ground. “Normal flight operations are gradually restarting in the US,” the FAA writes on Twitter.

The exact cause of the system failure is not yet known. The FAA announced that it has launched an investigation.

Air traffic with Switzerland was unaffected

A spokesperson told Blick that the US outage did not affect Zurich Airport.

Media spokesman Michael Stief said Swiss’s operational business was also unaffected. “Flights already in the air are expected to land normally in the US. Swiss flights scheduled to the USA are now operating as scheduled, with no cancellations planned. » (zis/shq)
