“The huge demand from the times of the pandemic is declining,” said Steve Koenig, chief market researcher for the CTA association, at the start of the CES tech show in Las Vegas. This is good news initially, because the chips are finally available again.
Extremely long lead times will gradually return to normal as more manufacturing plants come into operation. But for the industry, this could also herald problems: “We will evolve from a chip shortage to a possible oversupply.”
____ Metaverse is not a Zuckerberg quirk
Koenig warned on Tuesday (local time) not to view the much-discussed metaverse as a quirk of Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg. “For me, Metaverse is the next generation of the Internet,” said the director of the CES organizer.
Metaverse refers to a digital and interactive environment that can be accessed with virtual reality glasses on the one hand. In it, users can work, play, meet or shop as an avatar. The metadata store also includes applications where digital information is displayed in the real field of view of the user – the so-called “augmented reality”.
Koenig also touched on Sony’s activities, among other things. The Japanese electronics giant has announced that the new virtual reality glasses Playstation VR2 will be on the market soon before CES. Also at CES, automaker Stellantis and Microsoft introduced a showroom in Metaverse. And a company called OVR is coming up with a solution to transmit scents in the metaverse.
