Second graders fight hunger in Madagascar

“It’s not fair that people in Madagascar have nothing to eat,” says Emma. “Madagascar is 14 times bigger than Switzerland, but the kids are hungry,” says Martin. Second-year students from Oescher primary school in Zollikon ZH invited Blick to a press conference in their classroom on Thursday afternoon.

Seven and eight-year-olds have been investigating hunger in Madagascar since the autumn holiday, on the occasion of the Unicef Star Weeks campaign, which was held with the slogan “Children help children”. They presented their findings together with Manuel Burkart (45). The comedian from Cabaret Divertimento has been volunteering for Star Weeks every year since 2010. “It is a great pleasure to work for a good cause,” he says.

For the collectibles campaign, the kids made apple rings, baked crackers, or tea candles, which they now sell. Burkart gave another tip to sophomores: “You’ll get more tips if you’re friendly to your customers.”
