The 34th World Cheese Awards took place on 2 November in Newport (Wales). According to the Organizers Guild of Fine Food, these are the world’s largest awards event dedicated solely to cheese. 250 jurors tried 4434 cheeses from 42 countries and determined the winners in a multi-stage process. For them, winning the prize is an important economic step.
A small cottage cheese dairy from Vorderfultigen BE that competed with Gruyère and thus won first place can now benefit from this! According to the jury, the artisanal cheese offers “notes of herbs, fruits, and leather,” and melts gently on the tongue. Swiss cheese thus dropped a Gorgonzola Dolce from Italy to second place.

A return to the top rung for Switzerland after cheeses from Spain, Italy and Norway won world titles in previous years.
However, Switzerland hasn’t gone completely empty-handed in recent years: It has won other competitions such as the “World Championship Cheese Contest”, where prizes are awarded alongside cheese, butter and yogurt. This year it also won a Gruyère in the cheese category. In this case, one of the Fritzenhaus mountain cheese dairy in Sumiswald BE. An Appenzeller from Niederbüren SG finished second.
A Gruyère from Rossens FR cheese dairy also won the Brazilian World Cheese Championship in Sao Paulo in September. (rae)
