Swiss cinemas recorded an audience of 10.5 million last year. This was 16 percent less than in 2019, but 21 percent more than in 2022. The market share of Swiss films was higher than the previous year in 2023, at 6.3 percent, the Federal Statistical Office (FSO) announced in Neuchâtel on Monday. The increase was 1.2 percentage points. The domestic market share in German-speaking Switzerland was significantly higher than in regions where other languages were spoken.

More than half of the Swiss films shown in Swiss cinemas last year had German or Swiss German as their original language.

BFS states that audiences are slowly returning to Swiss cinemas. Recorded admissions surpassed the ten million mark for the first time since 2019. In 2023, 100 more films were shown in theaters than in the previous year, but the number of newly released films decreased by nine. The number of impressions was five percent lower than in 2022.

Prices increased by 2.6 percent

The decrease in these two values indicates that the significant increase in applications can be mainly attributed to blockbuster movies. The four movies alone, Barbie, Avatar: The Way of the Water, Super Mario Bros., The Movie, and Oppenheimer, would account for nearly a quarter of all submissions.

According to BFS, cinema prices have also increased slightly. The average price of a cinema ticket in Switzerland in 2023 was 16.30 francs. This was 2.6 percent more than the previous year. (SDA)
