There was a scandal at Ecublens VD on Thursday morning: employees of the meat processor Micarna stopped working at 9.15 am. “After management ignored the offer for a fourth meeting, employees decided to go on strike,” the Unia union writes in a media release.
Background: Migros Group announced at the beginning of February that it would lay off 1,500 people. Part of this also affects Migros subsidiary Micarna. The plant in Ecublens VD is scheduled to close in spring 2025 – there will be a loss of 84 jobs.
Micarna employees are resisting mass layoffs together with the Unia union. “Micarna management at Ecublens missed another appointment at 9am this morning to begin negotiations on planned mass redundancies,” Unia said. “The employees’ business meeting, which has been going on since the early hours of the morning, unanimously decided to go on strike at 09.15.”
Employees are calling on the company’s management to “finally reconsider their blockade stance” and begin “urgently necessary negotiations.”
