2,500 chocolate jobs cut: Swiss chocolate giant announces major cuts

Painful layoffs at the sweet chocolate giant: 2,500 people will be laid off at Barry Callebaut.

This means that almost 18 per cent of jobs will fall victim to the austerity program announced last autumn, a spokesman told the AWP. As it is known, the company wants to save 250 million francs every year. This corresponds to 15 percent of the costs.

The reduction will be implemented for the next 18 months, the CEO told the German newspaper “Handelsblatt”. We are already in dialogue with employee representatives.

Inefficient company structure

Feld justifies this reduction by its structure: Until last year, the company was run as four companies: a chocolate business in the US, a chocolate business in Europe, a business in Asia and a global cocoa business. “We never decided to standardize processes worldwide,” says Feld.

The aim is to reduce complexity and eliminate work duplication and inefficient structures, he told the German business newspaper.

However, layoffs are not the only measures taken by the new management led by Feld. Two factories will also be closed, one in Norderstedt near Hamburg and the other in Port Klang, Malaysia, according to the spokesperson. (SDA)
