Good news for deceived concertgoers: Ticket exchange Viagogo must pay compensation to more than 800 buyers.

Controversial online ticket platform Viagogo has been forced to pay compensation to 807 people in Switzerland. This brings to an end the six-year lawsuit against the event ticket seller. The French-speaking Swiss consumer organization FRC has launched the procedure against overpriced tickets.

Viagogo announced on Tuesday that the deal includes a compensation fund of 100,000 francs. It is intended only for injured parties who report to the FRC and make the procedure possible.

The FRC wishes to continue to remain vigilant and take action against misleading consumers when selling tickets on the gray market. The association withdrew its criminal complaint against Viagogo.

Geneva-based company Viagogo claims to be a secondary market for the sale of event tickets. Thanks to the use of the advertising algorithm of the leading Internet search engine, Viagogo is recognized all over the world. In September 2017, the FRC filed a criminal complaint against Viagogo with the Geneva prosecutor’s office for violating the law against unfair competition.

After “difficult negotiations”, the association managed to get Viagogo to revise its Swiss website. Among other things, it is planned to reduce the pressure on the customer during the ordering process, as well as greater transparency in prices and more precise information about where tickets are located.

“I’m ashamed that I fell for this.”

Viagogo has been criticized many times in recent years. EU consumer advocates also warned against the Swiss platform. In 2020, the Federal Court dismissed the lawsuit filed by the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (Seco) against Viagogo.

However, the platform was subject to a lawsuit by Circus Knie in 2021. The Federal Court found that the platform used unfair methods when selling tickets for circus shows.

Those affected had repeatedly reported their bad experiences with ticket exchanges to Blick. Regula Gredig (61), for example, spent 700 francs on music tickets and ended up sitting in the cheap seats! “I’m ashamed that I fell for this,” she said at the time. (SDA/sfa)
