Last year, the Swiss Agency for Therapeutic Products, Swissmedic, approved 41 medicines containing new active substances in the pharmaceutical field. With ten newly approved drugs, the field of cancer treatment (oncology) ranked first among new approvals.
Swissmedic announced on Monday that four more newly approved drugs enter the field of blood diseases (hematology). Other approvals include the fields of infectious diseases and vaccines, diagnostics, metabolic regulation, as well as rheumatology and immunology. According to the statement, the distribution of approvals according to application areas was comparable to last year.
Of the 49 drugs with new active ingredients tested in 2023, 84 percent were approved. According to Swissmedic, applications for approval for the remaining 16 percent were withdrawn by the relevant companies. Swissmedic also examined 79 applications for the expansion of drug use. Of these, 82 percent (65 applications) were approved. (SDA)
