As for “Neom”, the Saudi project of the century in the northwest of the country, nothing seems impossible or crazy enough. This also applies to the latest sub-project, “Aquellum.”
The centerpiece is an “upside down skyscraper.” It is embedded in a 450 meter high rock standing directly in the Gulf of Aqaba. The concept by responsible Berlin architect Tobias Wallisser envisions access via a floating marina. There, guests board a specially designed ship that travels to the skyscraper through a secret underground channel.
It is carved into the rock at a height of 100 meters and is oriented inwards. This means that there is an inner courtyard from the water to the “roof” where sunlight streams into the structure.
In the project documents shown so far, the interior looks like a building straight out of a sci-fi movie or video game. “Versatile transport system” makes it easy to move around the building. It hosts apartment buildings, hotels, retail spaces, leisure and entertainment areas, as well as arts and cultural centers. Rooftop gardens at the top offer views of the coast.
Aquellum is not the only project in the Gulf of Aqaba. This also includes the previously presented projects Leija and Epicon, as well as the recently presented projects Utamo, Norlana and Siranna. Utamo is also a futuristic event venue carved into the rock. Norlana is a new residential area aimed primarily at sports enthusiasts. Siranna is an exclusive destination right on the Red Sea coast, with exclusive luxury hotels and residences.
Neom is the name of a futuristic city and entertainment project in Tabuk Province, northwestern Saudi Arabia. Neom is an important part of the “Saudi Vision 2030” plan. This aims to diversify the Saudi economy and reduce its dependence on oil. Neom will incorporate smart city technologies and function as a tourism destination. The project covers an area of 26,500 square kilometers (more than half the size of Switzerland) and will be powered by renewable energy sources, if possible.

Projects elsewhere have been known for some time. These include the island of Sindalah, the megabuilding “The Line”, the Trojena ski resort in the mountains and the Oxagon high-tech center.
Neom has already chosen the names of other projects and registered them with the patent office. It is still unclear what is hiding behind names like Xaynor, Gidori or Jaumu.
