The new Prime Minister of France, Gabriel Attal, appointed his former partner Stéphane Séjourné as Minister of Foreign Affairs.

The new government in France has many familiar faces and more men in important posts than before: The new foreign minister will be Stéphane Séjourné (38), formerly head of the liberal group in the EU Parliament and former partner of the new Prime Minister Gabriel. Total (34). The Secretary General of the Elysée Palace announced the new government team in Paris on Thursday. Overall, this one is more right-aligned than before.

Attal was happy with his new team. “Action and results” are his guide, the broadcaster told TF1. The political heavyweights of the previous government, Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire (54), Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin (41), Defense Minister Sébastien Lecornu (37) and Justice Minister Eric Dupond-Moretti (62) will remain in their posts. It has also been confirmed that Environment Minister Christophe Béchu (49) and Agriculture Minister Marc Fesneau (53) will be in office. This means that seven of the most influential ministries are in the hands of men.

The previous minister of culture should go

Séjourné is a long-time friend and advisor of Macron. He has been head of Macron’s Renaissance party for more than a year. Her registered civil partnership with Attal has now been dissolved. The 38-year-old actress replaces Catherine Colonna (67). However, Colonna’s relationship with Macron was considered to be broken.

The most surprising new member was the conservative former justice minister Rachida Dati, 58, who became head of the culture department. Dati was the first woman of Maghreb origin to head a major ministry during the reign of former President Nicolas Sarkozy (68). She also became the first minister to give birth to a child unmarried while in office. Five days after giving birth, she appeared at the cabinet meeting again. Current Republican party leader Eric Ciotti (58) immediately announced his expulsion from the party following Dati’s appointment.

The previous Minister of Culture, Rima Abdul Malak (44), probably lost her job for the same reason as the Minister of Transport, Clément Beaune (42): both were among the members of the government who heavily criticized the stricter immigration law.

France’s smallest government team

Two members of the government who were in the spotlight of the French judiciary are also leaving: former Minister of Labor Olivier Dussopt, 45, who had ongoing criminal charges of nepotism during his time as mayor, and Minister of Health Agnès Firmin Le Bodo, 55), who had been recruited by the pharmaceutical industry during her time as a pharmacist. Catherine Vautrin (63) replaces the undeclared gifts given against her. He was most recently head of the Reims region and is now taking over both departments together.

The successor of the Ministry of Education, which Attal last headed, will be the former Minister of Sports, Amélie Oudéa-Castéra (63). He will retain responsibility for his previous department and will likely have one or more ministers of state on his side regarding the Olympic Games. Former Youth Minister Prisca Thevenot (38) will become government spokesperson and replace Olivier Véran (43).

A total of 14 ministers were appointed, including three deputy ministers. This makes it France’s smallest government team to date, although a number of foreign ministers will soon be added to the team. The first cabinet meeting of the new government will be held on Friday morning. (AFP)
