7185 new records: There was a boom in electric car sales at the end of the year

7,185 new battery-charged vehicles were registered in December alone. At the beginning of the year, 163,511 electric cars were registered on Swiss roads. Ten years ago there were 2,700 people.

Almost one in three new vehicles now has a plug. The electric car became the best-selling vehicle of the year in Switzerland for the third year in a row with the Tesla Model Y.

The market share of battery electric cars increased from 17.3 percent to 20.9 percent last year. The market share of fossil combustion engines decreased from 37.8 percent to 33.3 percent in gasoline and from 11.7 percent to 9.3 percent in diesel.

Added 4,000 public charging stations

Around 4,000 public charging stations will be added in Switzerland in 2023. This means that there are 16,865 public charging infrastructures for electric cars. According to experts, Switzerland has one of the densest charging networks in the world.

The industry association still fears that Switzerland could lose touch with electromobility. Growth is below expectations. Many European countries, especially Scandinavia and the Benelux countries, have grown much more than Switzerland. It is possible that Switzerland will not be among the top 10 countries. Switzerland removed its single market entry facilitation on January 1, along with the introduction of a car import tax on electric cars.
