Some staff of ground handling company Dnata will go on strike at Geneva airport from 4am on Sunday. The public service union (VPOD) announced this on Saturday evening.
Dnata is responsible for part of the ground handling services at Geneva Airport. “The hour of struggle has come for the Dnata workforce,” said the Public Service Union (VPOD). The administration’s threats had the opposite effect. It was said that the course of the strike would be decided during the strike meetings.
The impact of the announced strike on passengers was still unclear at the time of the announcement. At the request of the Keystone-SDA news agency, a Geneva airport spokesman said the airport would inform passengers. The airport expected fewer passengers on Sunday than in recent days, the spokesman said, without giving a specific figure.
The union had threatened a strike earlier in the week. A spokesman for the union told Keystone-SDA late Friday evening that no agreement had been reached between management and the union before the arbitration chamber in Geneva.
The workforce overwhelmingly rejected management’s proposals. Accordingly, the company wants to increase wages by 3 percent. The union had demanded 5 percent more wages and bonuses depending on the seriousness of the job.
Dnata employs approximately 600 people at Geneva Airport. Among other things, they issue tickets and transport passengers and luggage on the ground. The company works for Emirates, Ethiopian Airlines, Air France, KLM, British Airways, Iberia, Air Lingus airlines and partly Easyjet. (SDA)
