A hurricane hits Cairns in the middle of the week

Heavy rain has caused “life-threatening” flooding in north-east Australia. The Queensland city of Cairns was particularly affected on Sunday and its airport had to be closed, according to emergency services. The city is the starting point of the Great Barrier Reef, which is frequented by tourists.

Rivers in the region were filled after the recent tropical storm, which caused highways to be flooded and trees to be uprooted. A 10-year-old girl was struck by lightning in southern Queensland during Saturday’s fresh storms. His life was in danger.

“We have never experienced anything like this before”

More than 600 millimeters of rain fell in parts of Queensland in 24 hours, according to meteorologist Laura Boekel. He warned that another 500 millimeters of rain could fall in the next 24 hours. “Dangerous and life-threatening” flash floods could occur, he told reporters.

Queensland Premier Steven Miles, 46, said the situation was “very serious and could get worse”. “I’ve talked to people who have lived in the northern part of the state all their lives, and they say they’ve never experienced anything like this before.”

More than 10,000 people in Queensland were without power, according to Miles. Deputy Police Chief Shane Chelepy reported that numerous evacuation and rescue operations were carried out. Five emergency centers were opened. Chelepy said many houses were flooded but did not give any figures. Help was requested from the national disaster management authority. (AFP)
