Cantons have a duty: Top hotelier calls for better coordination of school holidays

Hotelleriesuisse President Andreas Züllig said in an interview with the “Sonntagszeitung” magazine published online on Saturday evening, “It is a problem that everyone is on vacation at the same time.”

The 65-year-old landlady of the Hotel Schweizerhof in Lenzerheide GR said that this year, sports holidays in the larger cantons of Basel and Zurich and in Germany, for example, are on the same weeks. “Rooms are filling up fast and prices are going up.”

Züllig, who left his post at the end of the year after nine years as president of the hotel association, said, “If at least the big cantons could coordinate their holidays, it would make a great contribution to tourism in the mountains.”

Züllig was concerned about the decreasing number of ski camps offering children a cheaper option for a winter holiday. He said fewer and fewer such camps have been held in recent years. Teachers would no longer go to the trouble, and communities would no longer operate or sell cheap ski lodges. “Children were introduced to snow sports. If this does not happen anymore, they will lose their connection with the mountains and will no longer be able to go on ski holidays.”

According to Züllig, the industry has largely recovered after the pandemic. However, he no longer believes that Switzerland will be flooded with tourists. “The offer is still expensive by international standards.”

The problem lies with influencers who post landscape photos, Züllig said. “People from all over the world travel there just to take a particular photo. “This is an absurd development and a real problem for individual points.”
