Are cows climate killers?

Agriculture produces greenhouse gases. But the vast majority of emissions come from burning fossil fuels: 80 percent come from traffic, heating and industry. Globally, agriculture causes 11.8 percent of all emissions. 1.3 percent goes to rice cultivation, and 0.6 percent goes to cutting down and burning forests for new fields and plantations. How much cows contribute to pollutant emissions is primarily a question of how the cattle are fed. Beef can be produced sustainably through grass-fed agriculture. Uncontrolled animal fodder cultivation, which requires clearing forests, is harmful to the climate. But Switzerland has a role model here: the proportion of soybean meal grown in Europe has increased from 0 percent to 50 percent in the last few years. In addition, approximately 99 percent of products imported from abroad come from certified agriculture. Ecological and social requirements must be complied with. This shows that as a consumer, you can act climate-friendly through conscious purchasing.

Wouldn’t farming be better than pasture?

Not every agricultural land in Switzerland is suitable for agriculture; for example, the majority of meadows and pastures in mountainous regions. If livestock farming were stopped here, these areas would become forests. Keeping ruminants in meadows and pastures provides more advantages. After steppes, meadows and pastures are the most important reservoirs of CO2.2 – Carbon dioxide produced largely during combustion processes. Grass is also a food source for livestock; We humans cannot eat it. The problem with ruminants is that they release methane gas produced in the stomach during digestion. However, this harmful greenhouse gas is integrated into the biological cycle. New feed additives could help reduce greenhouse gases from agriculture.

Which is better: plant protein or animal protein?

Proteins, also known as proteins, are the basic building blocks of life. They provide building material for our muscles, organs, skin, hair, nails and help our soul. There are proteins from both plant and animal sources; It’s hard to answer which one is better for humans. But Swiss nutritionist Paolo Colombani writes in an article in “NZZ magazine”: “It is clear that our body needs less protein when it comes from animal sources. Reason: It is of higher quality and easier to digest than vegetable proteins.” The general motto of nutrition when it comes to animal foods is also important: the more diverse the choice, the better. And Colombani warns against an unbalanced diet: “If we reduce meat consumption, we risk protein supplies, which are critical, especially in old age.”

Which foods are rich in protein?

The animal foods richest in protein are: Bündnerfleisch, which contains 39 grams of protein per 100 grams of meat, Emmental cheese (29 grams), chicken breast (26 grams), salami (25 grams), smoked salmon (23 grams), raw ground meat (22 grams). and ham (20 grams).

The plant foods richest in protein are: soy flakes (40 grams of protein per 100 grams of flakes), hemp seeds (37 grams), peanuts (26 grams), pumpkin seeds (24 grams), chia seeds (21 grams) and almonds. (20 grams).
