The Swiss airline will use cameras to count passengers on short-haul flights starting in the third quarter of 2024, it was announced on Thursday. Berlin-based start-up Vion AI’s software records the number of people boarding the plane instead of the personnel on board. According to the announcement, the artificial intelligence-based system will also be used in long-distance flights starting from the fourth quarter of next year.
Swiss says the new process will make boarding faster and more efficient. The airline emphasizes that it complies with data protection rules and that the records will be deleted after passengers are counted. At the end of October, Switzerland completed three months of testing of the system.
But the new technology is not only used for boarding. At Zurich Airport, two robots “Zulu” and “Charlie” (their names stand for the letters Z and C in the military alphabet) are now responsible for cleaning large floor areas in the check-in and shopping areas.
According to the statement made on Thursday, the two machines are intended to provide cleaning and thus ease the workload of the building cleaning team of 300 people. According to the information obtained, they can also answer a series of ready-made questions for passengers. The testing phase using two metal cleaning aids will last until at least the end of February 2024. (SDA/uro)
