Electric cars are on the rise in Switzerland. In September, one in five newly registered cars had electric drive. However, AutoScout24’s analysis shows that there are huge differences in our country. Blick shows you what your canton looks like.

Another marathon in Switzerland

In the overall market, the electric car industry still has a long way to go. Only 3.3 percent of passenger cars on Swiss roads are fully battery-powered. Gasoline and diesel vehicles account for 62 and 26.8 percent, respectively. To compare with the pioneer: four out of five newly registered cars in Norway are electric, and this trend continues to rise. The rate on the streets is almost 23 percent.

Zug is Switzerland’s Norway

Among the cantons, Zug can best compete with Norway. It has the highest electric vehicle rate with 6.8 percent. Alberto Sanz de Lama, boss of AutoScout24, sees several factors for Switzerland’s high value: “High average purchasing power and good charging infrastructure are not the only reasons. After all, people in Zug would also be able to buy high-priced internal combustion engines. After all, this is probably It’s a mix of a lot of philanthropic factors and curious people.”

Also on the podium are the Canton of Zurich with 4.1 percent and Vaud with 3.6 percent. The canton of Uri ranks last with only 2.2 percent.

Basel city with the densest charging network

But when it comes to charging station density, no canton can beat Basel-Stadt. The city canton has the densest charging network, with 600 public charging stations over 100 square kilometers. This is followed by Geneva with 233 stations and Zug with 155 stations.

Uri also lags behind in this canton ranking. There are only ten public e-gas pumps per 100 square kilometers, while the canton of Jura alone has fewer pumps, with eight. Peter Grünenfelder, President of Auto Schweiz, is not surprised that urban cantons are ahead and rural cantons are doing worse in comparison: “Rural and less financially wealthy cantons such as Uri and Jura have a much harder time getting good coverage.”

No more free shops in Switzerland

Recently, the last retailer in Switzerland also removed free charging stations. Since November 20, Lidl has also stopped offering free products. “Given the huge increase in energy prices, we are one of the last retailers in Switzerland to decide to switch to toll-free pricing,” Lidl said.

Still, there are signs that e-fuel pumps will become widespread in retail parking lots. Aldi, Migros and Coop want to expand their network in the future.

The biggest offer in the canton of Zurich

The urban-rural divide is also visible in the offer: From January to September 2023, only 112 electric vehicles were advertised on AutoScout24 in the canton of Uri, while only the cantons of Nidwalden and Appenzell Ausserrhoden had an even smaller offer with 110 and 48 advertisements for electric vehicles respectively.

But there were more options in Zurich. More than 6,700 electric vehicles were available here. It is also the canton where electric cars are most searched for on AutoScout24.
