German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said that the new draft of the central decision text of the World Climate Conference is “unacceptable”.

Germany and the EU rejected the new draft of the central decision text of the World Climate Conference (COP28) in Dubai. Federal Foreign Affairs Minister Annalena Baerbock (42) said on Monday that the text presented by the Emirates COP presidency was “a disappointment” and “unacceptable”. Baerbock is leading negotiations on behalf of the EU in the important area of emissions reduction.

According to the plan, the climate conference is expected to end on Tuesday. However, after long delays, the COP presidency only presented the new draft of the climate conference’s central resolution on Monday evening (local time). This no longer includes a shared commitment to phase out all fossil fuels globally. Instead, the new version only envisions “a reduction in both the use and promotion of fossil fuels.”

EU Climate Commissioner “unable to accept” draft

According to climate activists, an exit decision is absolutely necessary to comply with the 1.5 degree limit. Germany and the EU, as well as developing countries and island states particularly affected by climate change, publicly spoke out in favor of the exit decision in Dubai. However, oil states such as Saudi Arabia resolutely opposed this. The host country, the United Arab Emirates, also has rich oil and natural gas reserves, but is not as dependent on fossils as Saudi Arabia.

In addition to Baerbock, EU Climate Commissioner Wopke Hoekstra (48) also expressed disappointment with the new draft decision. “There are some good things in this, but overall it’s clearly inadequate and not enough to combat the problem that we have to combat here,” he told reporters in Dubai. The document contains statements that he “cannot accept”. (AFP)
