High costs of online business: Returns cost retailers up to 10 euros on average

The average cost for each returned item is between five and ten euros. According to the research, the volume of returns varies greatly depending on the sector. For fashion products, there are particularly high rates of 26 to 50 percent on average. Online buyers often order several versions to decide which garment they like best when they try it on, the study authors write. It’s part of the business model. The return rate is between six and ten percent

The return rate on a product basis is between six and ten percent on average across all product groups, and is similar to previous years. 58 percent of retailers say the rate is stable, 21 percent say it is increasing, and 15 percent say it is decreasing. According to the research, the epidemic did not have a serious impact on development.

74 percent of retailers specifically try to avoid returns. 70 percent record the reasons for returns so they can take the right countermeasures. For 86 percent of respondents, detailed descriptions and images in the online store are the most important measure to reduce the rate.

Very few sellers allow customers to cover shipping costs on returns. Only 14 percent of online retailers use this option to reduce the number of returns. Almost two-thirds cover shipping costs. “It seems to them that offering this service is essential because competition is high and they assume that customers expect such a service,” the authors write.
