Uber heads to the mountains: The ride service operates at a fixed price in Saas Fee

Uber is heading to the mountains and now offers its services in Saas Fee VS. The offer is valid only during the winter season and at a fixed price. Under the label “Uber Alps”, each ride at the car-free Valais winter sports resort costs 25 francs.

The big difference with the plains: The price of an Uber ride often fluctuates depending on the time of day, weather or demand. And the service is available all year round.

Trips are currently operated by local providers who use their electric vehicles to transport goods and luggage or take guests to hotels, holiday homes and trains. Despite the fixed price, the municipality of Saas Fee expects a lot from the new offer: “We are very pleased that the platform has developed a flexible solution perfectly adapted to the needs of our village, the tourism industry and guests.” says Saas-Fee mayor Stefan Zurbriggen in the Uber press release.

Expansion to other communities

Problem: It is often difficult to meet demand during high season and busy days; At the same time, mobility offers from holiday home providers or local businesses are generally not available at night and in low season. Hotel shuttles can respond to the request more flexibly, but may return to the hotel empty after the transaction. This should now change with “Uber Alps”.

Uber is already offering a temporary ride service in the mountains at the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum in Davos in January. If the concept is successful in Saas Fee, the driving service will consider expanding the offer to other holiday and winter sports destinations. Uber is in talks with other communities on this issue.
