Fear of inflation, rising health insurance premiums, high energy costs: These not only affect consumer sentiment, but also directly affect beer sales in Switzerland. At least that’s how the Swiss Breweries Association (SBV) explains the 2.5 percent minus in the past 2022/23 brewery year. Is there a hangover in the industry? Not everywhere.

Soft drinks are becoming increasingly popular

Plus 70 percent growth in the last five years, plus 5.3 percent in the last year of beer production: non-alcoholic beer is falling like zero. The market share of soft drinks is up to 6 percent. One in every 16 bars passes over the non-alcoholic bar. The association cites “changing lifestyles, increasing diversity as well as non-alcoholic beer as a valuable, natural sports drink” as reasons for the boom.

Almost 5 million hectoliters

Some beer statistics for the past year of brewing: 4.6 million hectoliters, i.e. 460 million litres, were recorded by the entire Swiss beer market. Domestic emissions are 3.6 million hectolitres. Beer imports are falling rapidly. The share of foreign beers in the overall Swiss market is 21.3 percent.

The number of breweries is decreasing

The number of breweries is decreasing after the boom in recent years. According to the Federal Customs Administration, there are 1,191 breweries in Switzerland. These include many small businesses and hobby mini-breweries. The reason for the consolidation in the market is increasing raw material prices and the corona epidemic.

50,000 good deeds

The Swiss beer industry is organized in the SBV and has been for over 146 years. Member breweries alone produce more than 550 quality beers. Turnover in the beer industry: over one billion francs per year. According to the company, some 50,000 jobs are directly or indirectly linked to it.

Did you know that approximately 25 percent of beer is sold in single-serve bottles and 40 percent in cans? Approximately one in every four beers was sold in restaurants.

Tax revenue from beer sales

The entire beer industry paid a total of 115.3 million francs in beer taxes in calendar year 2022 (including the Principality of Liechtenstein). According to further information on the SBV’s website, beer consumers paid the federal government approximately 320 million francs in beer and VAT combined.

The widest range of beers in Switzerland in store

The beer range and sales figures in its stores form the basis of Drinks of the World’s Swiss beer index. According to current figures, craft beer sales are through the roof. The share of craft beer sales has increased by almost 31 percent in the last twelve months. Its share in the entire beer range of the store chain is almost 60 percent.

Beer dominates sales, according to Drinks of the World. This is followed by India Pale Ale, non-alcoholic beer, German Style Pilsner and Kellerbier Hell. The biggest imports come from Germany, Belgium and the UK.

What is best sold on the counter? Appenzeller Quöllfrisch is in the lead, followed by Moretti and Feldschlösschen. Then comes Eichhof Lager and Augustiner Lagerbier Hell, and the beer index continues.

Highest consumption per capita

Where do people drink the most beer in Europe? The country with the highest per capita consumption is the Czech Republic, with a consumption of over 184 liters (Source: Statista 2021). Austria, Lithuania and Romania follow the ranking. Per capita consumption in Switzerland is around 53 liters per year. The cantonal rating is available at the internet retailer Brack.ch. Accordingly, the people of Lucerne make the biggest contribution to beer sales compared to the number of residents. Glarus and Aargau are next in line.
