Elina F.* (19) from Oberaargau no longer understands the world. He recently received a payment order from the responsible enforcement office. Huge bill: 5,478.90 francs. “The amount is too high,” complains F., who wishes to remain anonymous.

Fines have already been paid

F. admits partial guilt: In 2022 alone he was caught four times without a valid sentence. When asked, F. says, “My mother, whose surname is different from mine, has already paid all the fines.”

He had a general subscription (GA) in 2021 but failed to show it on his mobile several times. F. says that although the mother made monthly payments, SBB suspended the subscription due to outstanding payments.

He also later presented the GA at an SBB office. “I was still being punished,” he says bitterly.

This year it organized a GA Night, giving young people free travel from 19:00. “I was fined twice at 19:10 in the evening for supposedly driving without a ticket,” says an angry F, who once failed to show his ticket because his mobile phone battery was dead.

F. claims that he does not have to pay for the disruptions related to GA and GA Gece and that he was not notified of the payment order in advance. “How can you accumulate fines over 5,000 francs?” he complains.

What does SBB say?

When asked about this, an SBB spokesperson explains: “We confirm that the customer was operated on for outstanding payments having been checked in more than 20 times since 2021 without a valid or partially valid ticket.” SBB does not provide further detailed information.

“Partly valid” means that the person being checked has a valid ticket with them, but this ticket is not sufficient for the trip in question; For example, the wrong class was purchased or the ticket is not valid for the region traveled.

If you cannot show your GA card, you can show it at the SBB box office within 10 days and then you will only have to pay a fee of 5 francs (30 francs for more than 10 days). If you cannot present your ticket due to a dead battery, you will have to pay 30 francs for the control examination. Driving without a ticket results in higher fines and the surcharge on the fare (i.e. bus) increases if the offense is repeated.

It remains unclear how F. could suddenly receive such a high fine. The amount requested per crime for 20 crimes is a huge figure of 275 francs. SBB spokesman said the railway’s F.

Operation affects the future

F.’s family advises him to hire a lawyer. The guard has already arrived. Whether justified or not: Execution will leave its mark on F.’s life; for example, when looking for an apartment in the future.
