Morning time is like gold in your mouth; but only if it is accompanied by a large cup of coffee. For many people, coffee is an essential part of the morning. It wakes you up and you can’t really get fit without it, or so many people think. Therefore the following applies: You need a wake-up call as soon as you wake up.
But as American neuroscientist Steve L. Miller writes in his blog post “The best time for your coffee,” that’s exactly what you shouldn’t do. There he cites a study published in the “Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism” by the University of Sheffield. In the study, a team of researchers examined participants’ cortisol levels several times a day and found that these levels peaked three times a day.
Although the study scientists did not offer a link to daily coffee consumption, Miller used findings on people’s cortisol levels to determine the optimal time to consume caffeine.
According to surveys, there are times when the body produces significantly more of the anti-stress hormone cortisol. The hormone is responsible for making us feel fit and alert. So it has exactly the effect we expect from coffee: Cortisol awakens the senses and speeds up the metabolism!
The hormone is produced between 08.00 and 09.00 in the morning, 12.00 and 13.00 and 17.30 and 18.30. At this point, we should not reach for our favorite hot drink. Since the body looks after itself to stay alert and productive during these periods, you should not drink coffee unnecessarily.
Even after getting up, you should wait an hour before reaching for your coffee cup. Immediately after a night’s sleep, cortisol production is stimulated in the body.
Too much caffeine only makes us feel stressed. Anyway, Miller recommends giving in to your cravings only when you really need coffee. After all, too much caffeine can lead to addiction.
However, you should reach for coffee when the cortisol level in the body drops, because only then is it needed.
