Mobile phone subscription providers are engaging in a veritable discount war during Black Friday week. Everyone wants to get the best deal. All well-known companies, except Swisscom, have already launched their offers as of November 20. So is it worth buying a new subscription now? Where should you be more careful?
One provider in particular stands out in the jungle of discounts: Quickline gives all mobile subscriptions completely free for two years. “I’ve never seen anything like this,” says Oliver Zadori (40). He runs Jungle Compass, a comparison platform for mobile phone subscriptions.
Zadori asked Quickline three times: Subscriptions are essentially free. Users only need to pay a 40 franc activation fee. After two years, the subscription can be canceled free of charge. Only those who cancel their subscription before this deadline must pay the outstanding monthly recurring fees.
Otherwise, as in the previous year, GoMo offers the cheapest subscription with its Salt network. But it’s very cheap all year round. “Compared to the previous year, the monthly subscription increased from 9.95 to 12.95,” says Zadori. Be warned: GoMo is advertising a 50 percent discount. However, this does not refer to the subscription, but only to the activation fee of 39.95 francs. So it’s worth taking a closer look. You should also be careful with lifetime discounts because the list price may still change.
In general, subscription providers are offering similar promotions to last year. “It is very complicated. Some are more expensive than last year, some are cheaper,” explains Zadori. He recommends waiting until Black Friday, November 24, to get a subscription. “More offers may come. But the most important ones are already known.”
If you need a lot of data in Switzerland, the EU and the US, a Yallo Black subscription might be worth it. Unlimited data roaming in Europe for 24.90 francs. At Salt, a Swiss Max subscription with 1GB of EU data roaming costs 19.95 francs. The cheapest Sunrise subscription costs 29.95 francs for two years. Swisscom probably won’t launch a special campaign on Black Friday this year. Digital Republic and Teleboy are not included.
Zadori recommends not getting a subscription that includes a new device. “It is better to opt for a good subscription offer, then you will be more flexible,” says the expert. It may also make a difference whether you purchase the subscription online or in store. You save on activation fees when purchasing online with Sunrise and Swisscom. Some providers are practically only available online.
So why are mobile phone subscription providers participating in Black Friday? After all, with subscriptions there is no need to empty any storage. “It’s all about marketing considerations,” says Zadori. Yallo and Salt started their first campaigns in 2017 and 2018. Then their numbers gradually increased.
