Twitter’s successor accuses the organization Media Matters for America of using targeted manipulation to ensure that ads from well-known companies appear next to Nazi posts and anti-Semitic statements.
Media Matters boss Angelo Carusone said his organization continued to stand by the report and looked forward to winning in court.
In the lawsuit, “X” alleges that Media Matters artificially created a situation where ads appeared alongside posts with extreme content; for example, by specifically selecting profiles and updating the ad frequently.
However, the organization kept this secret, thus giving the impression that it had discovered the matches. In previous similar claims by Media Matters, other users were able to find extremist content as well as ads from well-known companies without manipulation.
Companies and organizations have only limited influence over which posts their ads are placed next to. Ads are shown based on age groups, specific areas or user interests.
To avoid a negative environment for their brand, advertisers are primarily dependent on “X” consistently keeping hate speech off the platform, or at least not allowing any ads to be placed next to it.
Otherwise, a user could be browsed to an extremist account and be shown ads based on their usual interests.
Other online services, such as Google’s video platform YouTube, have experienced similar problems with ad clients in the past. At the time, it had tightened content moderation to win back advertising customers.
“X” is headquartered in San Francisco and has official headquarters in Nevada; however, Musk filed the lawsuit in Texas, a state where the government and much of the population have very conservative views.
At the same time, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, a well-known advocate of right-wing political views, launched an investigation against Media Matters.
Musk’s space company SpaceX not only operates in Texas, but also moved the headquarters of the electric car manufacturer Tesla it operates there from California. (SDA)
