The offers on Black Friday are attractive: Huge discounts as far as the eye can see! However, you should be careful, especially when shopping online. It’s not uncommon for a big buying spree to be followed by a hangover.
Although there are thousands of discounts, there are also bad offers floating around. Karin Hirschi (55) is an e-commerce expert and managing director of the company “Online For You”. She knows the disgusting tricks providers use to trick us. Sometimes they manage to make consumers fall in love with them.
The overview shows ten tips on how to shop online the right way. And how do you avoid getting scammed by dealers with questionable offers?
one
Bargaining often encourages you to make a spontaneous purchase. Ultimately, this means: You buy something you don’t actually need. “Create a wish list and stick to it while shopping,” advises Karin Hirschi.
2
Planning is half-life. Even if you’re a bargain hunter, you definitely need to be prepared in advance. Karin Hirschi: “Book the products you want in advance. You can place your order as soon as the discounts apply.”
3
“For many offers, a customer card is required to order a discount,” says the expert. For you, this means applying for the card in advance; so you can get the best deal on Black Friday without any hassle.
4
Many companies don’t only offer discounts on Black Friday. But for the week before and the days after. Sign up for the newsletter to be informed about early deals. “Bargain delivers land very quickly and directly to your inbox,” says Hirschi.
5
A truly nasty psychological trick: The countdown shows that a particular offer will only be valid for a few minutes. E-commerce expert Hirschi warns: “Keep calm and don’t rush. The offers are frequently repeated, and this ruse only suggests artificial scarcity.”
Gareth Harvey researches our consumer behavior at the Consumer Research Laboratory at Bangor University (Wales). Purpose: To explain how brands, discounts or scents influence our purchasing decisions. He shared his results with “Spiegel”.
“The consumer goods industry uses certain signals to control our subconscious,” says Harvey. Music, colors or lighting play a role. He also discovered that people automatically click on well-known brands more often. This is because people don’t like to reject things they like. A brand achieves such a connection through years of targeted advertising.
Harvey knows why we fall for so-called discounts. “The more complex the deal, the less activity in the rational brain,” he says. The result: impulsive spontaneous purchases. «I advise you to be prepared not to buy anything. If you find something, you buy it, if you can’t find it, you don’t buy it.”

A provider will often advertise that a product cannot be found cheaper from them. See for yourself. Hirschi recommends online price comparison sites. They show whether this is really a great bargain. And: Don’t be fooled by lowest price guarantees.
7
Looking at the general terms and conditions is worth its weight in gold. Because these are also valid on Black Friday. Be sure to check what shipping costs. Delivery time or processing returns can also be a nightmare.
8.
Make it clear how you would like to pay and check if this is possible for the item you want. Hirschi knows: “Counterfeit stores are also using the buying spree for their own criminal business.” Therefore, you should avoid bargain orders, which are only possible with prepayment.
9
If you are unsure of the size of a garment, buy several. You can often return unsuitable products. If the terms and conditions allow. Expert advice: “Buy more instead of less!”
10
The first Black Friday offers will go live online at 12:01 p.m. What this means for you is: go to sleep. And start your shopping adventure early in the morning. «The best offers often sell out quickly. That’s why going to bed late or waking up early will be worth it,” says the expert.
November 24, 2023 is Black Friday everywhere in the world, including Switzerland. But: Where does this shopping day with crazy discounts actually come from? So what should bargain hunters look for?
