Doesn’t spoil the fun for us!: Why does ski season still start on the weekend?

The first reports of heavy snowfall and the opening of the first ski resorts under the glaciers last weekend were immediately followed by sobering weather reports: mild temperatures, rain up to high altitudes and even a snowfall limit at 2,700 meters on Monday.

Is the start of the season in danger again? MeteoNews CEO Reto Vogeli (39) said no to Blick’s question: “The weather is still unstable and characterized by low pressure, but it remains cool in the mountains.” After a short and moderate period, Vogeli expects new snowfall at higher altitudes on Friday: “Not a lot, but it should be enough for the start of the season.”

Green light for ski areas

Blick asked about the ski areas that opened over the weekend. Urs Egli (46) from Titlis-Bergbahnen in Engelberg assures that the start of the season is not in danger: “We are experiencing a few difficulties in preparing the tracks due to high humidity, but the temperatures will drop by Friday evening, so we will start on Saturday.”

In addition to Davos-Klosters, where the Parsenn ski area will be open every day from Friday, mountain railways will also open next weekend in Andermatt-Sedrun-Disentis and Verbier/4 Vallées.

Good forecasts for higher altitudes

In most other ski areas the official opening of the season occurs later; You can find the dates here. Vogeli doesn’t believe this could be in danger: “Our long-term forecast looks good, at least for the ski areas above 2000 metres.”

In other words: Temperature and humidity remain low enough for enough natural snow to form or for conditions to be good enough to use technical snowmaking. This means that the conditions for the planned start of the ski season have been met in most areas: “It may take a while to get down to the valley, but you can ski safely in the mountains,” says Vogeli.

Advert

Conditions in the ski areas below 1,800 meters are still not ideal at the moment. “But this could still change,” Vogeli hopes.
