Until now, e-fueling at Lidl was also free for him: Martin Bäumle (59), GLP National Assembly Member and CFO Dübendorf. In May 2016, the self-confessed Tesla fan opened the first e-charging station in the Lidl parking lot in the Zurich community. The discounter now has a network of 50 locations with charging stations.

It’s all free starting November 20th. “Given the huge increase in energy prices, we are one of the last retailers in Switzerland to decide to switch to toll-free charging,” says Lidl. At the same time, a new payment system for e-recharge will also be introduced.

Aldi’s e-charging station network is still under construction. The discounter wants to install fast charging stations in 150 of its 240 branches in Switzerland from summer 2024. “Fast charging and shopping can be combined very well,” says Aldi partner Gofast. The company provides the infrastructure of eight charging areas per branch. Payment is made by credit card or through partner applications of e-mobility service providers.

Less free e-fuelling while shopping

Signs also point to expansion at Coop and Migros. Two major distributors already have paid e-charging stations in their branches. However, the network needs to be expanded here too. Coop plans to install e-fuel pumps in more than 200 new locations by 2026. Migros wants to expand its offer for e-car drivers to 2,000 e-charging stations at Migros locations and Migrol gas stations across Switzerland by 2025.

Signs point to the expansion of the e-charging station network and the disintegration of free culture in retail. Lidl should at least have a discount for customers who have the Lidl Plus shopping app on their smartphones. Has electric car owner Bäumle already downloaded this app on his mobile phone?
