The “chalet” building shape is unique to Switzerland. It emerged in the 19th century when city dwellers built rustic huts in the countryside to escape the stench of industrialization.
Wealthy city dwellers and travelers early discovered the appeal of this pristine mountain landscape. The chalet has become “chic”.
And this trend continues today: chalets are in demand and are becoming increasingly expensive depending on location.
Demand for real estate may be decreasing in general, but there is no crisis in Alpine real estate. Chalet prices have risen by an average of 4.4 per cent in the 12 months to June 2023, driven by growth in regions such as St Moritz, Verbier and Crans-Montana, according to a survey of Knight Frank customers. This is what “Cash” says.
The alpine climate also helps sales. New buyers from Asia, the Middle East and Southern Europe are flocking to the chalet market to escape heat waves, according to Knight Frank.
Supply is scarce. This keeps prices high.
