New GAV for gas station stores: More minimum wage for gas station clerks

Minimum wages have already increased in many places this year. As of today, November 1, it will also apply to employees of approximately 1,100 petrol station shops in Switzerland.

Social partners, the Swiss Gas Station Stores Association VTSS and the Unia and Syna unions, as well as the Swiss Trade Association, have started negotiations for the renewal of the gas station stores’ collective bargaining agreement (GAV) in 2020. After the interruption due to the pandemic and the “difficult negotiations”, as stated in the subsequent statement, better conditions have now begun to be negotiated.

Accordingly, the minimum wage will be increased by 130 francs by 2024 (from +3.14 percent to 3.47 percent, depending on seniority and qualifications). Additionally, a new wage category will be introduced for unskilled personnel, taking into account years of service. For the first time in the canton of Ticino, mandatory minimum wage is being implemented in stores at gas stations.

The lowest minimum wages are in Ticino, at 3,600 francs per month times 13. In Valais, Jura, Graubsunu, Schaffhausen and Thurgau, the minimum wage is 3,730 francs, and in the rest of Switzerland it is 3,830 francs.

Better planning at the center

Employees are now entitled to two consecutive days off twice a month and ten weekends off each year. Maternity leave has been slightly improved (16 weeks from the 3rd year of service instead of the 4th year) and there are now up to four paid training days.

GAV also provides better regulations on breaks, video surveillance, cash differences, recording of working time and night and evening security. The flexibility of working time arrangements has also been improved: Employers and employees now have six months to make up for overtime, instead of four.
