The mafia in Switzerland earns 300 million francs from cocaine alone. Every year. This is estimated by a study by the University of Lausanne and Swiss Addiction. Organized crime gangs smuggle white powder from Colombia to Europe and distribute it to local dealers. Zurich, Basel and Geneva are among the European cities where the most odors can be detected in wastewater.
For decades the mafia was underestimated in Switzerland. “We don’t see or feel organized crime. It flies under the radar,” says Nicoletta della Valle. The director of the Swiss Federal Police is fighting against the underground economy at the federal level. They network with national authorities, such as the cantonal police, immigration offices or trade registries, and exchange information with foreign police forces.
Which mafia groups are up to mischief in Switzerland, what tricks they use and how they settled here – the answers are given in this latest episode of the “Überblick” information podcast.
