Anyone who has recently stayed at a Motel One hotel should be concerned about their data. The hotel chain fell victim to a hacker attack, as it announced in September. According to media reports, the data is now available online.
According to Süddeutsche Zeitung (“SZ”), millions of customers’ names and travel dates were stolen. The almost six terabyte data set contains an almost complete list of overnight stays for several years since 2016. In addition, employees’ private billing addresses, dates of birth, internal business numbers and some mobile phone numbers can also be displayed. found online.
The hotel group, headquartered in Munich, confirmed that it was the target of a hacker attack on the online X network, formerly known as Twitter, on September 30. According to the report, the hacker group ALPHV claimed responsibility for the attack, which was claimed to be for extortion purposes. Motel One said the incident was being investigated by IT security experts. A criminal complaint was also filed.
According to the report, overnight stay data comes from emergency lists that the hotel chain creates daily. When asked why this information was withheld for years, Motel One did not respond to SZ’s request. Dieter Müller, the founder and co-owner of the chain whose data was also published in the leak, called on politicians to significantly improve their cyber defenses in the face of massive data leaks.
Motel One also has two hotels in Switzerland. One is in Basel and the other is in Zurich. Motel One did not disclose to Blick whether the data collected from these two hotels was also affected by the hacker attack. (lui/SDA)
