According to Apple boss Tim Cook, the negative consequences of global warming also create great difficulties for companies. (archive image)

Tim Cook seems to understand the problem of climate change. He points out this in an interview and explains how his company is trying to become completely climate neutral.

“This summer you don’t have to just look at drought, forest fires and heat,” Cook said in an interview with the German Press Agency in Thisted, in Denmark’s Nordjylland region. The US group operates a solar park here with a Danish partner, supplying electricity to Apple’s European data center in Viborg.

“All these events constantly remind us of how important climate protection is.” Therefore, it is in the interest of shareholders for companies to combat climate change.

Will it be climate neutral by 2030?

Cook emphasized that his company’s environmental policy is not a marketing measure or so-called greenwashing, that is, an attempt to give itself an environmentally friendly and responsible image to the public without an adequate basis for this. “I think greenwashing is reprehensible. If you look at the work we do, it’s hard work.”

According to Apple, its offices, stores and manufacturing facilities have been climate neutral since 2020. The iPhone maker has also pledged to be completely climate neutral by 2030. This promise covers not only Apple’s operations, but also the entire supply chain and ecological footprint of Apple products. The devices’ own electricity consumption is also included in the calculation.

Recycling and repair

Cook emphasized that the solar panel area used by Apple in Nordjylland is an example of his company’s climate protection activities. “We also made 30 percent of Apple Watch components from recycled materials. “We have reduced our packaging and will remove all plastic from packaging by next year.”

In the interview, Cook also addressed accusations that Apple makes it very difficult for customers to repair products with the Apple logo. When it comes to the “right to repair” Apple has “already done a lot.” “We have a lot of people who are certified to do repairs. If you want to do the repair yourself, we provide tools and procedures so you can do the repair at home.”

But Cook said many people don’t want to do that. “You want to go to someone who is used to fixing things. That’s why we try to make searching for a service provider as easy as possible.”
