… because it is possible there from today October 4, 2023 “Haunted house“current. The new edition of Rob Minkoff’s horror comedy “The Haunted Mansion” (2003) only arrived in cinemas here on July 27, 2023 – almost two months later you can now catch up on the film or relive it at home. And we can certainly make something like a recommendation.
Because even though ‘Ghost Villa’ is in the FILMSTARTS review does not exceed the average, The remake convinced us much more than the first film adaptation with Eddie Murphy. So if you already liked the original, it might be worth adding the new version to your watchlist:
Don’t even know the first film or do you want to check twenty years later whether it has stood the test of time? No problem. Because You now have the opportunity to directly compare both film adaptations – because ‘The Haunted Mansion’ is too included in your Disney+ subscription*.
“Haunted Mansion” on Disney+: A theme park attraction becomes a movie (again).
Like “pirates of the Caribbean” or “Jungle cruiseThe ‘Haunted Mansion’ films are also based on a Disney theme park attraction. But while the adventures of cult pirate Jack Sparrow could delight the masses (and draw them to the cinemas), ‘The Haunted Mansion’, released the same year, had one problem above all: poor computer effects. And especially in this area, the new edition now offers solace.
‘The Haunted Mansion’ comes with much better special effects and is therefore more fun than the previous model, which was visually disappointing across the board. However, the fact that even master director Guillermo del Toro (“Pan’s Labyrinth”, “Shape Of Water”) failed to make a film of the amusement park attraction says something – which is ultimately exactly noticeable in the new edition.
Because Even though the film is convincing in terms of tricks, the story still doesn’t offer much. “Better visual effects alone are not enough if the story remains mediocre,” author Markus Tschiedert briefly summarizes in the FILMSTARTS review why “Ghost Villa” is better than “The Ghost Villa” (1.5 out of 5 stars) is, but in the end it still does not go beyond 2.5 stars. The audience was also not impressed, which was ultimately reflected in the box office: with production costs of more than $150 million, ‘Ghost Villa’ only managed to gross $114.4 million.
That’s what “Ghost Villa” is about
Travis (Chase W. Dillon) moves with his mother Gabbie (Rosario Dawson) to a beautiful villa, but soon afterwards strange things start happening. Could there be ghosts wreaking havoc here? Scientist Ben Matthias (Lakeith Stanfield) must find out exactly that. After all, he has just developed a miracle lens that should make ghosts visible.
And so he teams up with an exorcist (Owen Wilson), a historian (Danny DeVito) and a medium (Tiffany Haddish) to put an end to the terrifying…
And if that’s not enough star power for you, there’s also Jamie Lee Curtis, who steps into the shoes of Jennifer Tilly as Madame Leota, and Oscar winner Jared Leto as The Hatbox Ghost Crump.
