Volkswagen Group is affected by a major IT collapse.

The IT outage to network components at the Wolfsburg location has been present since noon, a spokesperson said Wednesday evening. The reason is not yet known. The Wolfsburg automaker has assembled a crisis team.

Four vehicle production sites in Germany are currently at a standstill; Wolfsburg, Emden, Zwickau and Osnabrück are affected. Component factories in Kassel, Braunschweig and Salzgitter were also affected: “The outage has been present since 12.30 and is currently being analysed. There are implications for factories producing vehicles.”

VW subsidiary Audi is also affected by the IT outage, an Audi spokesman said when asked in the evening. The extent of the situation is still being investigated.

The reason is still unclear

A company spokesman was initially unable to say anything about its impact abroad. It doesn’t look like an outside attack right now. It is not yet possible to predict when the problem will be resolved and production will restart. “Handelsblatt” had previously reported on this issue.

At the end of August, VW’s rival Toyota suffered a complete failure. Technical problems experienced by the Japanese automobile giant caused a one-day production halt in Japan. An error in the parts order management system was responsible for this. It was later said that the reason was insufficient storage space on the servers. It was emphasized that the incident was not a cyber attack.

Toyota was forced to close all its factories in March last year after domestic supplier Kojima Industries experienced a system failure due to a cyber attack. All 28 Toyota production lines at 14 factories were affected, affecting production of approximately 13,000 vehicles. The company was also forced to temporarily halt some of its operations in July after a cyberattack on a computer system at Toyota’s central Nagoya port disrupted port services for two days. (SDA)
